The federal court order. After ruling that Google had illegally maintained a search monopoly, the court ordered Google to share its Navboost click data with competitors. A federal judge determined that this click data is so central to ranking quality that withholding it is anticompetitive.
Google’s own patents. Google holds multiple patents describing systems that use click-through rates to influence rankings. Patent US8938463 states that “results on which users often click will receive a higher ranking.”
Google engineer statements. Beyond sworn testimony, Google engineers have stated publicly that using click data for rankings is “a very reasonable and logical thing to do, and ignoring the data would have been silly.”
Any single one of these would be noteworthy. Together, they make the strongest case for any ranking factor outside of the obvious ones like relevance and content quality.
Why bots don’t work.
If clicks affect rankings, the obvious shortcut is to automate them. Use a bot to search for your keyword and click on your result thousands of times. It’s cheap, it’s fast, and it doesn’t work.
